Flutterwave Teams Up with Law Enforcement to Launch Revolutionary Anti-Cybercrime Center

Flutterwave has announced a transformative partnership with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to establish an advanced Cybercrime Research Centre and significantly develop Africa’s digital security landscape. This groundbreaking initiative, which includes collaboration with the American Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), represents a significant step forward in the battle against internet-based financial crimes.
The partnership was officially established on June 14, 2024, through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in Abuja. The high-profile ceremony brought together key figures from all participating organizations, including EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, Flutterwave’s Founder and CEO Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, and FBI Director Christopher Gray. Mobolaji Bammeke, Flutterwave’s chief compliance officer, attended the event alongside other senior representatives.
As Africa’s premier payments infrastructure provider, Flutterwave has positioned itself at the forefront of the fight against digital fraud. CEO Agboola articulated the company’s vision during the signing ceremony, emphasizing their dedication to fostering a secure financial ecosystem across the continent. He particularly acknowledged the EFCC’s persistent efforts in combating internet fraud and other illicit economic activities.
The state-of-the-art research center, integrated into the new EFCC Academy, is designed to serve multiple crucial functions in the fight against cybercrime. A primary focus will be implementing sophisticated fraud detection systems and comprehensive training programs for law enforcement personnel and industry professionals. The initiative includes an ambitious plan to provide advanced training and research opportunities for 500 young people, equipping them with vital skills for the modern digital economy.
EFCC Chairman Olukoyede commended Flutterwave’s extensive reach and impact across Africa, noting how the research centre would significantly enhance its capability to combat financial crimes. This collaboration marks a crucial step in ensuring a more secure economic environment for Nigerian citizens and businesses.
The center’s operations will encompass several key areas, including cutting-edge research, policy development, and creating a comprehensive resource hub for financial crime investigations. Special attention will be given to emerging threats, particularly those related to cryptocurrency transactions, and the center will house advanced tools and technologies for investigation and prevention.
This collaboration between the public and private sectors comes at a critical time when financial fraud poses increasing threats to the stability of payment systems. The partnership demonstrates how technology companies like Flutterwave can effectively work alongside law enforcement agencies to address these challenges while promoting African economic growth.
Establishing the research center also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s financial sector and global standing. By combining technological expertise with law enforcement capabilities, this initiative creates a robust framework for detecting, preventing, and prosecuting financial crimes.
The center will facilitate knowledge sharing between the public and private sectors, creating a collaborative environment for developing effective strategies against cybercrime. This approach recognizes that combating financial crimes requires a unified effort, combining diverse expertise and resources.
Through this pioneering initiative, Flutterwave and its partners aim to create a more secure and reliable financial ecosystem that protects businesses and individuals while fostering innovation in the digital economy. The research center stands as a testament to the shared commitment of all participating organizations in securing Africa’s digital financial future.
